“So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness.” Nehemiah 8:17
I remember when my shower was plugged up and the water had difficulty draining. Obviously there was a blockage in the drain. So, I did what every homeowner does... call a plumber! No, I googled how to unplug a drain. This video explained what tool I needed and how to do it. I went to Home Depot and bought an auger to snake my drain. Upon my return I followed the instructions and snaked the drain which removed the blockage. Oh how glad my wife and I were to have the shower fixed! In fact, the whole household expressed their gladness!
In the Nehemiah story, Ezra has been reading the law of Moses when he came upon Leviticus 23. It was here that he read about the practice of the Feast of Tabernacles. He shared it with his fellow priests who in turn shared it with the people. They had forgotten how to properly celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. In obedience to their new revelation, the people built booths to live in for eight days in remembrance of God's faithfulness and provision from when His people wandered in the wilderness for forty years.
Because the people put their faith into action they experienced a very great gladness. A spirit of great joy filled the city. In the same way, when you walk in obedience to God's Word, you and those around you will experience great gladness!
