Seeking God First (Guest Post: Pastor Mark White)

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Sometimes we need to be reminded of the most basic things in the Christian life, here it is a reminder to put God first. In this context, Jesus encourages us that when we seek Him first that our basic needs of food and clothing will be taken care of. Jesus is saying that if you put ME first I have you covered. No need to worry or fret, just come to Me. The application is that if He will take care of my basic needs, He will definitely take care of everything else too. We all have needs and that is the way God has made it. Why? So that we would seek Him. But where do you go for your needs to be met?

I do a lot of biblical counseling. People come in and are having difficulties. One of the first questions I ask is “How is your relationship with Christ?”, “How would you describe this last weeks’ time with Him?”. Not every problem or difficulty can be tied to your time with the Lord, but these questions can reveal where your dependence lies. Seek first is actually a command, seek first and continue to seek first, His kingdom, His righteousness. Oh, how He wants to bless us, supply all our needs, give us wisdom for our marriages, problems, difficulties, and life in general. This week let's make a renewed effort in pursuing Christ first.
